Hi - SH replaced their Motion Sensor. The old ones are almost impossible to find.

Does anyone know if there would be any compatibility issues between Powerhome and the "Motion Sensor II"?

I asked Smarthome tech support but they weren't very helpful. Essentially he said if I was using 3rd party software (even if the SW is sold by SH) I'm on my own :-( ).

I found a source for the old one and am debating whether I should stock up...

Thanks!

Info from the SH forum:

I do know the Motion Sensor II has a different Insteon Sub Category ID and is called an unsupported device in the present ISY994i firmware. Adding support is in the works but not yet.

Dave - will that preclude it working with PH?

I called SH back and got a nicer person :-) (Most of them are pretty nice). It was released 2 weeks ago. It's basically the same PIR sensor so performance should be about the same. All config is via software (no more jumpers), you can poll it for temperature, and the link button's on the outside. He thought that config aside, it could be drop-in replacement as long as you don't want to tap any of the new features.

More info - and this seems important. I'm told from the SH forum that

"while the Insteon protocol itself remains unchanged, there is a different subcat with the motion sensor. Depending on [controller] company, it will probably not recognize the new subcat".

Powerhome experts (and Dave) is that an issue?

Jeff,

The new motion sensor should have no problems working
with PowerHome. As as long as the device supports
basic Insteon, PowerHome will work with it. The Cat or
subcat doesnt matter as the PowerHome Insteon Types
table can have any new cat/subcats added by the user
(the auto discovery process will do this
automatically).

As long as you can link the motion sensor (or ANY
Insteon device) to the PLM (this can also be done
manually if absolutely necessary) then you'll get the
basic control. As SmartHome said, the only thing that
would probably be an issue would be the software
configuration and even that could be done with
PowerHome raw commands once the protocol is published.

Dave.

Thanks Dave - that's what I assumed, but great to hear it confimed. :-)

I was able to add the new motion sensor IIs (2844-222), but it took a little finagling. I was never able to use Discovery Mode in Insteon Explorer to find the new MS while it was in linking mode. I was able to add the MS address manually and set it up as an older 2420M motion sensor. This has the advantage of allowing some configuration using the Config 2E tab within the Options menu under the Device Tab. After adding the device to the PLM with a Clear and Add Full, I was able to create links with the motion sensor. It took a combination of repeatedly going into linking mode on the MS and random clicks on the SET button to get all the links to be created, not sure why just putting the MS into linking mode didn’t allow the links to be communicated, but at least all the links were made. I don’t have the correct subcat because selecting the 2420M as the type automatically sets it (incorrectly). I was able to get the Discovery Mode to see the new device after I had already added it, and it created a “XXXX – New Insteon Type not in Product List.” Unfortunately, the Options menu for a new device (even if I modified it myself) doesn’t bring up the (very convenient) Config 2E menu for old motion sensors. Is there a way to modify a new device with this menu, Dave? Also, I’m not sure what the other functions are on the new MS II, but it sounds like temperature is one of them. How could I query the MS for its temperature while it was communicating anyway?

Can anyone tell me how to adjust the sensitivity of the V2 Motion
Sensor using PH?   THanks!

Jeff,

I did a bit of research and it appears there arent any (available) developer docs for the V2 motion sensor. I found a couple of commands to change
the LED brightness level, Timeout Interval, and Dusk/Dawn level is all. It would appear that the folks at Universal Devices (makers of the ISY
line of controllers) were able to get a copy but no one else seems to have one.

From the owners manual though, there is a jumper behind the battery that allows you to change it. With the jumper off, max sensitivity. With the
jumper on, reduces sensitivity to around half.

If anyone know where I can find docs on the V2 motion sensor, let me know and I'll try to add those options into the config section.

Dave.

Hi Dave - thanks. BLH over at the SH forum made this comment
"I also believe the ISY994i can set some of the options.
I also read that Smarthome did not provide the folks at UDI the
information for it to be implemented correctly. So they did their best
to implement the options with a varied degree of success."

So apparently SH is going down the "walled garden" path. forcing
users who want to use their modules to also use their controllers
and limited (compared to PH) SW. Seems like they forgot about
how that worked out for
Apple with their PCs (pre-iPhone). I think this will hurt them as
people who need more sophisticated control migrate to other
products.

Thanks though
/j
