A month ago a Windows 10 update massively trashed my hard drive.
I rebuilt it and recovered backup files and reinstalled PH 2.2 beta3-3, but ever since, PH is crashing almost daily. Prior to this it ran for a year with no issues!
It appears to crash pretty consistently after receiving a response from several different KPLS (but not all of them), as well as an Insteon Thermostat.
I have a collection of Event Log captures that might give some idea of what the issue might be. I am stumped but think I recall a similar problem many years ago that was fixed with a patch from Dave. But I don't recall exactly what that fix was.

Rather than clutter up the forum, I have posted the Event captures on my Google drive here....

Event log captures

Dave... note for your convenience I have highlighted in yellow the last event before the crash. After the "crash" there are no more "Insteon Out's" issued, Only "In's"

Dave if you (or anyone else) have any ideas of what might be the problem and a cure for it.... I would be deeply grateful.

Ken,

I took a look at the logs. Im assuming the "crash" is when PowerHome stops sending "Insteon Out" commands but otherwise works normally.

If so, then it's probably something with the Insteon controller. I wouldnt expect a new Windows install to be responsible but it's hard to say.

Before we do anything, can you try the new PH 2.2beta3-5 version that is on the forum? Ive made quite a few tweaks to the Insteon controller and it just may be
possible that the problem is gone in that version. If not, then I'll need to know what type of PLM you're using (USB PLM, serial, Hub, stick, etc) and I'll work from
there.

Let me know,

Dave.

Thanks Dave, I'll take a look at the new beta, and let you know what happens.
BTW- my PLM is the 2448A7-PLM USB dongle.

PS- How do I get my meme icon accepted in my profile settings here? I have it on my Google drive but when I enter that URL it seems to be ignored, thus my icon here is blank.

Dave-
I am puzzled and confused re the PH 2.2beta3-5 code
location.

I can find nothing in the forum that I perceive is that
code.

I am running PH 2.2 beta3-3. Do I use that executable and
overload it with the PH 2.2 beta3-5 patch, or is there a
root executable somewhere I am not seeing?

Thanks.

Ken,

Not sure why it isnt showing up for you but the post about 2.2beta3-5 is in the General section, either at the top or right below. Here is the link:
http://www.power-home.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=10953&PN =1.

This is a patch that will be unzipped on top of your 2.2beta3 install.

Ken,

What is the URL for your icon? One thing that may be a problem is that the forum ONLY accepts a 64x64 icon. If your icon is 64x64 and
you're still having problems, send me the URL and I'll force it into the settings.

Dave-
I sent the link directly to your email addr.
It is a 64x64 png file and I tried both Edge and FireFox
browsers but neither worked.
Thanks.

Ken,

You should be good now. I think it was the Google drive link. What I did was edit your message and then used the forum image upload and
saved the graphic to the PowerHome server and then put that link into your icon.

Dave -
Back on main topic of this thread. Installed PH2.2 beta3-5 with a clean install. That is, I removed everything from my PH 2.2 beta 2-3 install and started all over again. {Actually didn't remove anything or un-Install PH from Windows but merely renamed the powerhome folder and let PH create a new folder.. in case that might make a difference.}

Did the install yesterday (6/23/22) at about 11 AM and by 9:30PM PH locked up again. It quits sending Insteaon Outs, records Insteon Ins but seems to do nothing with them, executes Macros but without results (probably because there is no OUT I/O).
I started up the InsteonRawLog recording today and will pass that onto you at the next lockup.

Dave-
The crashes come pretty quickly.
Attached hereto is a brief "EventLog" capture around the last crash. It is restricted as the 100KB Forum size limitation created severe quality issues when I tried to resize a large snippit. I have the large view if you need it sent.

2022-06-25_085157_eventLog.pdf

Here is a "briefRaw" Insteon log (extension changed to txt to input to Furum) in the minutes surrounding the crash. It is trimmed from a larger data collection to minimize your hunting effort. Larger data set available if needed.
2022-06-25_085613_briefRaw.txt

Almost all of the crashes seem to be associated with KPL activities.

I am now going to rebuild the links in the worst ones to see if it makes a difference.

Well the KPL Links reconstruction didn't help at all.

Crashed within ~16 hours.

Have logger turned back on to try and catch more data.

Ken,

Having reviewed the uploads of the Eventlog SS and the Insteon Log capture, I don't really have enough information to troubleshoot.

I think the next step would be to keep Insteon logging going. As soon as you're able to notice when it has "crashed", go to the PowerHome menu File->Debug Info and
clipboard the data. Save it to a file. Email that file, at least 5 minutes of the Insteon log info before the error and 2 minutes after a couple of screen shots of
the eventlog before the crash and a screenshot after the crash. I'll take that data and see if I can determine what may be happening.

Thanks,

Dave.

Dave thanks much.
I have been having other issues too with other programs.
Ran HP extensive diagnostics this morning on the hardware
and discovered that one of my 4 memory modules [4GB@] has
failed.
Ordered replacements ~10 min ago.
I suspect that the problems I've had occurred when a
program crossed over into that memory space.

Will get new modules in ~4 days and will advise what I
discover.

Ken,

Interesting. Makes sense as a possible culprit since it seemed to appear out of the blue and nothing had changed with PowerHome or with your internal
routines.

Let me know how it turns out, my fingers are crossed. Ive been having bluescreen problems in my own system. Ordered memory on Saturday (received it
yesterday) but won't get a chance to try it out until sometime (hopefully) this weekend.

I was blown away by current memory prices. When I bought
the computer 7 years ago the price of 12GB of RAM was
around $250, as I recall.

Today, each 8GB module I bought was only $29.

Too bad Moore's Law couldn't apply to cars, food, and rent
pricing, eh!?

I have had similar occurrences where the system appears
to hang also. I have reinstalled PH numerous times and it
seems to run ok for a while and then starts to
deteriorate. Some of the symptoms are multiple Insteon
outs and no responses back. Sometimes it will launch Init
without any apparent reason. I thought it was a macro
problem but the more I looked into it I got off of that
theory and started focusing on trickery. It has the
appearance of something/someone is stepping on memory
space. I have run all manufactures (Lenovo X1 laptop
Windows 11 Professional (x64)) diagnostics. Infact, I
have changed systems. If I were to take an educated
guess, I would suspect the interrupt handler of the USB
controller as I believe Ken is also running the same
Insteon USB controller. Dave, I doubt it's in your code
but more in Microsoft's code.

Just my 2 cents worth of 30 years with IBM and writing
code for teleprocessing devices in BTAM, QTAM in MVS and
DOS. But then again at 85 I don't remember much of
anything anymore nor care...

Ken, good luck and Dave if I get any closer to it you
will be the first to know.

BTW Ken, I didn't know you were astute in Moore's Law.
"Too bad Moore's Law couldn't apply to cars, food, and
rent
pricing, eh!?" How about in reverse? I bought a fully
loaded Tesla Model 3 Premium in 2018 and have been
offered, by resellers, twice what I paid for it in cash
with the sale of my Tesla stock. Moore's Law? And the
great part is I have a super charger in my garage, and I
fill it up with gas once a week at no noticeable cost in
my electric bill.

Pete..

OMG! Peter!

What a treat to hear from you. I have not seen any posts
or indications that you were still on this mortal plane,
so glad to hear at 85 you are still kicking. :-)

I'm hanging in there at 82.5, Just got a Pacemaker 3
weeks ago, and feeling stronger than in almost 2 years.

Microsoft is NOT my favorite vendor at the moment. A
Windows 10 update 2 months ago went amock and totally
trashed my hard drive. Worse auto-backups weekly/monthly
I thought were working (but didn't bother to check) were
not working and I lost over a year's worth of work,
including almost 8000 music files I had curated for use
as a background music feed to our home and a small FM
transmitter I set up to provide 24/7 music to our
neighborhood. It has taken me hundreds of hours to
reconstruct the music and I am only 1/2 done so far.

We have 3 vehicles (2 petro and one electric). One petro
vehicle a Kia that is almmost 4 years old and has 2300
miles on it, and a Chevy Spark 3 years old with 1700
miles, but our electric (golf cart) has almost 4000 miles
on it.

The Kia hybrid averages ~ 50mpg and I estimate in the 4
years we have owned it we have only put in maybe 10 tanks
of gas.

Where we live in The Villages in central Florida almost
everything we need is within walking distance or 3
minutes of drive time as we are surrounded by
restaurants, shops, health care, and entertainment
facilities.

Lots of ways to "skin the cats" eh?

I realized yesterday that ph has been crashing every night ever since I did a clean re-install of Windows 10 two months ago after a meltdown of my PH computer resulting in almost a total loss of 2TB of disk data.

Investigating I discovered that these failures were occurring when a VB2010 file trim routine I wrote a decade ago to keep the daily ph auto-back of the database trimmed to 30 days, so it didn't grow to a gargantuan size.

That routine has been running nightly for over a decade but VB2010 was depreciated by Microsoft several years ago and I suspect when I had to rebuild my Windows install recently, that supporting code for VB2010 was not contained in the new Win 10 OS release and thus my old code no longer worked.

So I wrote a Windows Cmd Script .bat file to trim the db records. Amazingly the script could be done in one line (versus over 20 with the VB program). I have a few more lines for Remarks and clarity.

In case anyone needs a simple file trim approach here is what I have....
Code:

rem ** Trim PH autobak db to 30 days
ECHO on
set dPath=C:\powerhome\database\dbautobaks\

REM forfiles /P %dPath% /D -30 /C "cmd /c echo RMDIR /S /Q @path" ::test
REM Use DEL /P to request permission before deleting file.
forfiles /P %dPath% /D -20 /C "cmd /c DEL @path"
pause
exit

This was saved in a ".bat" file named and saved in the powerhome folder....
ph_Trim_db_to_30days.bat

and called from PH in a Macro line...
Code:

ph_run("C:\powerhome\ph_Trim_db_to_30days.bat")

Hope this is helpful.

GadgetGuy:

I'm confused. I'm not understanding what database keeps growing. If you're talking about the eventlog, you can simply use
ph_trimeventlog(x) where x is the numbers of days you want to keep.

I have that command in my "new_day" macro that runs at 00:00:01 everyday. I run ph_trimeventlog(3) to keep 3 days, no more.

Please help me understand what I'm missing.

Thanks.
